Situational leadership - what is it?

Situational leadership is an effective leadership theory that focuses on both the situation and the individual employee. This philosophy, developed by Paul Hersey in 1969, has been further developed and applied in many organisations.

By using this form of leadership, you adapt your leadership style to the challenge and the individual employee. This tool is not only seen as a management method, but as a dialogue and co-development between manager and employee that creates strong leadership and good communication.

the 4 competence levels

Situational leadership is about understanding the employee's level of leadership needs. Depending on the employee's skill level, ability and willingness for the task, you as a manager choose between the 4 leadership styles, which are either more task-oriented or relationship-oriented.

There are four levels of competence in this management style, based on the employee's ability and willingness for the task:

  • K1: Low willingness and low ability for the task
  • K2: High willingness and low ability for the task
  • K3: Medium willingness and high ability for the task
  • K4: High willingness and high ability for the task

The benefits of situational leadership

Based on the employee's development level, you as a manager can assess the right management style. By matching the employee's need for motivation or ability to fulfil the task, you can apply an appropriate management style.

Implementing situational leadership has many benefits for managers, employees and your organisation's bottom line. You'll achieve better fulfilment of your department's strategic goals, increased job satisfaction, reduced staff turnover and the development of both individual and team-based leadership.

By implementing this, you become a leader who is able to influence others effectively by customising your messages to the recipient's skill level and the specific situation.

The founder of Situational Leadership, Dr Paul Hersey, always described leadership as "any attempt to influence others". So whenever you want to influence another person, it is essential that the delivery of the message is customised to the task and the recipient.

Training opportunities

As something completely new, we offer several ways to be trained in Situational Leadership. It's up to you which programme you want to take.

Benefits of the programme

Whichever variation you choose, you will develop your leadership skills, establish your competency levels in relation to the model and gain a greater understanding of your own strengths and development areas in relation to the influence styles.

Furthermore, it clarifies employees' specific areas of development, provides a better match between employees' skill levels and managers' day-to-day management, and is an effective tool for employee training and development.

This can free up more resources to work on the long-term goals of the organisation and create greater efficiency.
