The Situational Leadership trainer certification enables you to work professionally with one of the world’s most recognised leadership tools. The certification equips you with the skills to train and educate other leaders in adapting their leadership style to different employees and situations. Situational Leadership was developed by Dr Paul Hersey and is based on the principle that effective leadership requires a flexible approach. A leader must be able to adapt the level of control and support depending on the employee’s competencies and motivation in a given task. 

As a certified trainer, you will learn both how to apply the model in practice and how to communicate it to others. You will be equipped with the tools to teach, facilitate learning and help leaders develop their leadership

The 4 leadership styles in Situational Leadership

Adapt your management style to the employee’s level of development

Directive (S1) – high control and low support. The manager gives clear instructions and provides close supervision.

Coaching style (S2) – high direction and high support. The manager explains, motivates and involves the employee in the task.

Supportive (S3) – low control and high support. The manager supports the employee in decision-making and task completion.

Delegating (S4) – low supervision and low support. The employee works independently on the task, whilst the manager monitors progress from a distance.

When managers master these four leadership styles, they become better at developing employees, strengthening collaboration and driving higher performance within their teams and organisation.

Requirements and competencies following certification

As a certified trainer in Situational Leadership, you will learn both how to apply the model in practice and how to communicate it to others. You will be equipped with the tools to teach, facilitate learning and help leaders develop their leadership skills within the organisation.

In order to maintain their coaching licence, certified coaches must complete at least four two-day training courses during the licence period. This ensures that the coach continues to have the necessary experience and expertise in teaching and working professionally with the model.

Certification programme at HR Solutions

We offer the trainer certification in Situational Leadership as an intensive course comprising theory, practical exercises and training in how to communicate the model to others. The course provides you with both a deep understanding of the model and the pedagogical tools to teach leaders within organisations. During the training, we work with case studies, video material and training exercises, so that you gain practical experience in facilitating training in Situational Leadership. There is also a strong focus on feedback on your performance, so that you can develop your skills as a trainer. 

Course structure

PHYSICAL CONDITIONING - Step 1

  • Participation in an open two-day course
  • Introduction to the Situational Leadership Model
  • Review of target groups and presentation formats
  • Working with coaching materials and teaching methods

Certification process

PHYSICAL CONDITIONING – STEP 2

  • Participation in a certification programme organised by Situationsbestemt Ledelse® in Denmark
  • Partnership with Situational Services Nordic AB
  • Practical training in teaching the model

Final approval

PHYSICAL TRAINING - STEP 3

  • En mastertræner i Situationsbestemt Ledelse observerer certificeringen
  • En Master Coach i Situationsbestemt Ledelse vil være til stede for at observere og godkende certificeringen, normalt Kurt Lausen fra HR Solutions. Coachen vil være til stede på dag 1, 2 eller 3.
  • Minimum 4 a´ to-dags træningsforløb i licensperioden
